Who Is Our Galaxy Publishing?

I always knew I wanted to be a writer. I had dreams of living a life like Carrie Bradshaw, writing my own column in the Big Apple and eventually becoming a novelist. But life had other plans. The path I imagined for myself didn’t unfold the way I thought it would. There were circumstances beyond my control that I allowed to wither my spirit. Before I knew it, I had fallen into the "starving artist" mindset, convinced I’d be just another writer lost in the crowd, and that my dream would never become reality.

Then everything changed when I became a mother. During my pregnancy, I found myself writing poetry after six long years of creative silence. Holding my daughter for the first time, I knew I couldn’t tell her that I had once been a little girl with big dreams that never came true. So, I decided to query my poetry collection, Tainted Lionheart, taking my first steps into the publishing world.

Though I eventually decided not to pursue traditional publishing for my book, the process was a revelation. I learned so much—through querying, speaking with industry professionals, and the BA program I was in—that I felt like I had cracked open the door to an entirely new world. As I shared my journey, more and more women began reaching out, asking for guidance on how to pursue their own writing dreams. I realized I could help others avoid the pitfalls I encountered, and by 2020, just before the pandemic hit, I launched Our Galaxy Publishing.

At first, Our Galaxy was meant to be a small independent press. But something didn’t feel right. Instead of taking women’s stories into my hands, I wanted to keep the power in theirs. Many women came to me, hoping I’d take their books and make them a success. But I didn’t want them to surrender their power. That’s when I realized my mission wasn’t to publish for them but to equip them to do it themselves.

In 2021, the vision for Our Galaxy Publishing became clearer. I wanted women to be knowledgeable and empowered, fully aware of the publishing landscape so they could advocate for themselves. My goal shifted to focus on education, entrepreneurship, and creativity. I wanted to build a community—a galaxy—of empowered women who could navigate the publishing world with confidence.

By 2022, Our Galaxy shifted from a traditional press to a support system, an educational platform, and a place for creative people to get the tools they need to succeed. Whether they want to self-publish and need help creating an effective, affordable plan, or are seeking a literary agent and want to refine their manuscript and query pitch, we aim to be the guiding post, the sounding board to help them make intentional decisions.

We believe in the intersection of storytelling and entrepreneurship. Our mission is to make sure creative people—writers, artists, designers, and business owners—have the knowledge and support to share their stories and skills with the world on their own terms. We’ve worked with over 100 authors and creative people to date, continuing our mission to empower even more individuals to take control of their creative journeys, build sustainable careers, and confidently amplify their unique voices with the world.

We want women writers and business owners to know more and do more without questioning their decisions or giving up their creative power. As a woman-owned and operated independent publisher, we vow to support as many women-identifying writers within our capacity to position themselves at the forefront of their own creative lives. We promise to be a vessel for women to launch their creative destinies without fear, guilt, shame, doubt, or settling for less than what they deserve.

In Our Galaxy, there are no starving artists; only bad-ass women forgetting their own unique paths.

“I used to see women sharing their stories with the world as an act of self-liberation. Now, I see it as the most impactful form of rebellion against every system that’s ever tried to silence us. I used to think women pursuing creative careers was a brave and inspiring risk to take. Now, I see it as the most imperative way to dismantle every single professional industry that continues to try and prove we have less to offer. They can’t keep us in the dark anymore. And we don't have to play by their rules when we know how to create them ourselves.” — Christine Weimer
